Gov. John Hickenlooper endorses Beth McCann for Denver district attorney

Gov. John Hickenlooper has endorsed Democrat Beth McCann for Denver district attorney.

McCann, who beat two other candidates in the Democratic primary, is running against independent Helen Morgan in the general election.

Here’s what Hickenlooper said in a press release from the McCann campaign:

“Beth is uniquely qualified to lead Denver’s DA office, and I am confident she will make Denver a national leader in criminal justice reform.  Throughout her career, she has worked tirelessly to make Denver and Colorado safer places for all of our families. She is one of the hardest working and most diligent legislators in the Colorado House of Representatives and I know she will bring that same commitment to excellence to the Denver District Attorney’s office.”

McCann served in the state legislature during the entire time Hickenlooper has been governor, and he has signed into law dozens of bills she sponsored, including human trafficking legislation, a law providing due process for juveniles in the criminal justice system, a law creating fairness in foreclosure proceedings, a law protecting domestic violence survivors, a law strengthening our prescription drug monitoring database and the universal background check law requiring background checks for all gun purchases.

A state representative since 2008, McCann also served as Denver’s manager of safety in the 1990s and as deputy attorney general overseeing civil litigation and employment law in the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

Morgan is a longtime prosecutor and chief deputy in the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
