The Rockies’ Jon Gray struck out everybody Saturday night

You might have tuned the Colorado Rockies out by now. They’re eight games back in the National League Wild Card race with 14 games to go in their season.

That’s OK.

But if you weren’t watching Saturday night, you missed young righty pitcher Jon Gray have one of the best outings ever at the pitchers’ death trap that is Coors Field.

Gray pitched a four-hit, complete-game shutout and struck out 16 (!!!!!) batters. That broke Randy Johnson’s record of 14 he set in 2001 for the most strikeouts ever at Coors Field.

Gray had everything working — fastball, slider, curveball. He’s now fanned 172 players on the season. His ERA is down to 4.42.

Gray’s showed flashes of brilliance this year, with Saturday being the flashiest example. You can see why many consider him the ace of next year’s staff — and why there might be hope in LoDo.
