Democrat Leslie Herod looks to be the next representative for state House District 8, covering part of Northeast Denver. She was ready to declare victory at a Democratic election party with about 87 percent of the vote.
“I think what went right for me was building a coalition of folks of all races, class, gender and sexual orientation. They all came together to support me,” she said.
“I will be the first African-American LBGTQ elected official to ever hold office in Colorado. I think what went right for me was bringing all the communities together and saying we can do this together.”
Clouding her likely victory, though, was the prospect that Republican Donald Trump could take the U.S. presidency.
“I’m worried to the end. But we’ve got time.”
