Low key, the Colorado Rapids might be the best team in the MLS

While the Broncos have been busy being good, so have the Rapids.

*Whispers*

Did you know that with three games left in their season, the Colorado Rapids are very much in the hunt for the Supporter’s Shield, which is awarded to the MLS team with the most regular-season points?

No? You’re probably not alone.

While the Broncos have been busy being good, so have the Rapids. They’re second in the Western Conference with a 14-5-12 record and 54 points. Only FC Dallas (56 points) has more.

Colorado already clinched a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs and a first-round bye. The Rapids beat the Houston Dynamo over the weekend 3-2. Second-year striker Dominique Badji, filling in for the injured Kevin Doyle, scored a pair of goals.

Badji has racked up three goals in his last four games. It’s the Rapids’ defense, though, that’s been this team’s strength all season. They’ve allowed 29 goals in 31 games, which is the fewest in the MLS by a comfortable margin. The next closest team, Toronto FC, has given up 35.

Colorado begins a string of three games in eight days against the San Jose Earthquakes Thursday night. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The Rapids then play at Portland on Sunday and wrap up the regular season against Houston Oct. 23.
