M Uptown, formerly Hamburger Mary’s, is closed indefinitely

The sign on the door at M Uptown says “closed for renovations,” but many are already mourning the loss of the popular LGBTQ bar at 700 E. 17th Avenue.

The restaurant, bar and and drag show venue is already marked as “permanently closed” on Google, though co-owner Jennifer Kustok has told Westword she and her husband hope to remodel and reopen.

“Things kind of really came to a head with our building,” Kustok told the alt-weekly. “But I’m looking forward to the next couple of months of rethinking things and looking at a renovation of the space. It really needs it, and we may reopen with a different concept.”

As Westword’s story points out, the building has been in that family for decades, so they at least don’t need to worry about losing a lease.

We’ve reached out and will update here when we learn more about a possible new concept and what will happen to the bar’s signature Dreamgirls drag show or drag bingo night.

Performer Jackie Summers, who has worked at M Uptown, née Hamburger Mary’s, for 10 years, confirmed the news yesterday afternoon on Facebook.

“My heart is broken into a thousand pieces as this was just not my place of business but truly my home. I will miss it dearly.”

The bar changed over from Hamburger Mary’s to M Uptown in late 2015 after franchise negotiations failed, but the events remained the same, as did almost all of the decor.

A new Hamburger Mary’s has since opened in Denver, an awkward seven blocks east on 17th Avenue.
