DISH uses viewership data to predict who will win presidency, U.S. House

DISH collected anonymized, aggregated viewership data from millions of set-top boxes across its national footprint.

The satellite service provider DISH weighed in Monday — because why not — on who would win the 2016 presidential election.

The Englewood-based company’s “Viewers to Voters” predictive model shows former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will clinch the win over her competitor businessman Donald Trump. DISH also forecasts Republicans will hold onto the U.S. House of Representatives with an estimated 245 out of 435 seats.

DISH didn’t have the data to “meaningfully predict” what will happen to the Senate.

For the model, DISH collected anonymized, aggregated viewership data from millions of set-top boxes across its national footprint. The model shows customers who watched more sports, religious or family-oriented television were more likely to vote for Republicans, whereas those who prefer TV series/specials, education programs or music-oriented shows were more likely to vote for Democrats.
