Nuggets shooting guard Will Barton sprained his left ankle in the third quarter of Denver’s loss to the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

Barton left the game. X-rays came back negative.

“It’s just sore, a bad sprain, a real bad sprain,” Barton told Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post.

The injury leaves a hole at shooting guard. Barton was already filling in as the starter for Gary Harris, who partially tore his groin in the preseason. Harris is close to returning, but it’s unclear if he’ll be available for Denver’s next game, which is Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Barton’s absence will mean someone needs to step up offensively for Denver. He’s averaging 18 points on 50 percent shooting three games in.

There is not yet a timetable on his return.
