Boasberg to DeVos: ‘Use all the efforts of your office’ to protect DACA

U.S. Education Betsy DeVos may have skipped Denver Public Schools during her spin through Colorado on Wednesday, but that didn’t stop Superintendent Tom Boasberg from getting his point across.

In a letter hand-delivered to the secretary by a DPS employee, Boasberg called on DeVos to protect a program that defers the deportation of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

“As Secretary of Education, we respectfully ask that you convey the importance of this issue and the catastrophic consequences it will have to the President and the Congress,” Boasberg wrote. “We implore you to use all the efforts of your office to ask the President to reverse his decision and work with Congress to find a humane solution that builds on our country’s history and the American Dream.”

DPS provided a copy of the letter late Wednesday at Chalkbeat’s request.

Boasberg, who leads the state’s largest school district, has frequently spoken out against Trump administration.

DeVos last week said her “heart is with them,” referring to the thousands of students and young adults with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, status.

During a press conference Wednesday, DeVos said she believed Congress would act in creating a more permanent program for individuals enrolled in DACA.
