Do the Colorado Rockies have fair-weather fans?

The off-to-a-good-start Colorado Rockies are set to play their home opener Friday in front of thousands of fans at Coors Field. But just how reliable are those Denver baseball fans year to year?

It turns out they’re pretty darn reliable, despite the team’s less than stellar performance in recent years. Today’s Chart of the Week shows there’s no clear line between the Colorado Rockies performing poorly and home game attendance suffering or vice versa.

On average, 2.6 million people attended Rockies home games during the 2006-2016 seasons. That’s roughly the equivalent of every resident in the city of Denver going 3.8 times a season, according to Major League Baseball data.

Some could say attendance has been stagnant in recent years.

“A lot of it is tied to team performance, and unfortunately, the team hasn’t performed as well as we all would have hoped the last four years or so,” the Rockies’ chief customer officer and vice president of ballpark operations Kevin Kahn told Denverite last spring. “The last time we were in the playoffs was 2009. So part of it is a reflection on them, but if you look at where we fall in total attendance out of the 30 teams, we’re always in the top half.”

Kahn is right. The Rockies tend to be in the top half in terms of home game attendance.

“We’re fortunate we enjoy a strong fanbase that supports the team win or lose,” he said.
