The Colorado Rapids and manager Pablo Mastroeni have reportedly come to terms on a contract extension just as his current deal was set to expire.

ESPN reported Tuesday that the Rapids and Mastroeni have agreed to a three-year deal, which kicks in after the deal he’s on now expires at the end of December.

Mastroeni finished his third season as the Rapids’ manager in November, and it was one of the most successful campaigns in franchise history. Colorado finished the regular season second in points, and it made it to the Western Conference Championship before losing to the eventual MLS-champion Seattle Sounders.

The Rapids didn’t qualify for the postseason in Mastroeni’s first two years as manager but seemed to turn the corner last season. Colorado’s strength was its defense, which allowed an MLS-best 32 goals.

Mastroeni spent 12 seasons as a player for the Rapids prior to coaching. He was the captain of the 2010 team that won the MLS Cup.

ESPN said the deal could be announced as soon as Wednesday.
