John Elway has been enormously successful since he rejoined the Denver Broncos in a front-office role. Since Elway became general manager in 2011, Denver has gone 67-28 in the regular season, won five AFC West titles, been to two Super Bowls and won one championship.

Given that success, perhaps it’s not surprising that Elway’s new contract — which was announced earlier this week — will supposedly pay him somewhere in the “neighborhood of $6 million per year.”

That’s what Albert Breer of the MMQB reported Thursday.

Breer notes that this an unprecedented amount of money for a GM: “Previously, no GM had crossed the $4 million per barrier,” he wrote.

“During these last six seasons, John’s clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports,” Broncos team president and CEO Joe Ellis said after the contract was announced. “He’s demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen and a consistent ability to build competitive teams.”

Elway’s new deal runs through 2021. That means he’ll be under contract for at least five more seasons.
