Did you know Denver is the birthplace of cable TV?

Somehow, I did not, but that’s what makes the city a great location for Series Fest, a festival dedicated to the “best and boldest in episodic storytelling.” It’s in full swing now at the Sie Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave.

Among the things on the schedule today: digital shorts compilations at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., “Field of Vision – New Cinematic Journalism” at 6:45 p.m. and “The Eyeslicer” at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $12-15.

In other series:

Nerd Nite Denver returns at the Oriental Theater, 4335 W. 44th Ave. The series for “fans of TED talks, the Discovery Channel, Wikipedia binges and drinking” tonight will feature talks about drugs, antiheroes and ancestry. It lasts from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and tickets are $6-9.

And over at The Deer Pile, 206 E. 13th Ave., 3 Course Comedy is back to vamp on Filipino foods. Tonight’s comics are Patrick Scott, John Pappanaiou and Nora Lynch. As always, food is served at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m.
